Aston, Birmingham born winger Billy Dorrell began his football career with Singer’s in 1889 and joined then Midland League Leicester Fosse in 1892. Such was the impression he made for The Fossils that he was signed by First Division Aston Villa for £250 in May 1894 and made his Football League debut at Liverpool that September. However he found opportunities limited despite scoring 7 goals in his 12 appearances during his two seasons at Villa Park and he was allowed to rejoin by now Second Division Leicester Fosse in March 1896.
At Filbert Street he played regularly in Leicester’s first team for the following two seasons, and topped their goalscoring charts with 14 goals in 1896-97 before losing his place in 1898, joining non league Belper in 1899 after 24 goals in 63 appearances during his second spell. He was later on the books of Burslem Port Vale during 1905-06 without making their first eleven.
Billy Dorrell was the father of Arthur Dorrell who played for Aston Villa and England in the 1920’s and also played for Port Vale.
