Description

Annbank, Ayrshire born inside right Sam Donnelly had joined his hometown Scottish club Annbank in 1892, before moving south to join Second Division Notts County in the summer of 1893, making his Football League debut at Crewe Alexandra that September. His first season was dramatic. Notts County’s League finish qualified them for a Test Match (as per modern play-offs) which they lost 4-0 to Preston North End, but meantime Donnelly played 5 of their Cup ties, scoring twice, as they made their way to the FA Cup Final, beating First Division Bolton Wanderers 4-1 at Goodison Park, hence became the first team from outside the Football League’s top flight to win the FA Cup. He scored 7 times in his second season but failed to appear at all during 1895-96, most likely due to injury, and after 9 goals in 39 appearances he joined Blackpool in the 1896 close season. A single season with The Seasiders saw 5 goals in 18 appearances before he re-joined Annbank in 1897.
