Coatbridge, Lanarkshire born outside left Davie Donald had signed for hometown professional Scottish League Second Division club Albion Rovers in July 1905 before coming to England in June 1908 when he joined Second Divison Bradford Park Avenue, making his Football League debut against Hull City that September in their inaugural League match. After 2 goals in 28 games his performances had impressed enough for Derby County to buy him for £350 in March 1910. In just over two seasons at Derby he scored twice in 45 appearances but lost his place at the end of September 1911, playing only once more as Derby won the Second Division Championship in 1911-12, before he was released to join Midland League Chesterfield Town in June 1912.
Southern League Watford bought him for £70 in June 1913 and he scored 3 times in 24 appearances in 1913-14, before joining Queens Park Rangers. His career was then interrupted by the First World War, during which he appeared as a guest player for Derby County and Leicester City, but he played for Rangers both sides of the War, scoring 9 goals in 97 appearances, and played 22 matches in their inaugural Football League campaign in 1920-21. Having gone non league that summer, already 36, with Ilkeston United, joining Coalville Swifts in December 1921, he returned to Scotland in July 1922 and played a season for Hamilton Academical in 1922-23, scoring 3 times in 13 games for The Accies before retiring from football in 1923.
