Carlisle born winger John Dockray had joined his hometown professional club in 1911, then in the North Eastern League, and joined Second Division Bury in 1912, making his debut at Stockport County in March 1913. However his time at Gigg Lane was brief and later in 1913 he joined non league Solway Star. After World War One he joined Exeter City, playing in their inaugural Football League match in August 1920 against Brentford and indeed being ever present that season. He was a regular during his 4 seasons at Exeter scoring 12 goals in 143 games for The Grecians before joining non league Bideford in 1924.
