Description

Chopwell, County Durham born inside left Stan Docking began his football career with Birtley in 1933 and was signed by Second Division Newcastle United in August 1934, making his Football League debut against Fulham in January 1935. After two appearances in his debut season, he had to wait until January 1937 for a further first team opportunity, but failed to establish himself as first choice for Newcastle.

Described as “a big, powerful and bustling forward who favours the direct line for goal” and as “a tireless worker”, Docking was sold to Second Division Tranmere Rovers in May 1938 for £1,100 after 3 goals in 21 appearances for The Toon. He scored 7 goals in 31 appearances for Rovers in the final season before the Second World War but couldn’t help prevent their relegation, whereafter his Tranmere career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War, during which he appeared as a guest for Hartlepools United, but he died of apparent disinfectant poisoning in May 1940 while serving as an Aircraftman 2nd Class with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
