Newcastle born inside forward Harry Dobson signed for Southern League Coventry City from North Shields Athletic in 1913 and was at Coventry when peacetime football was suspended due to World War One. After the War he joined Newport County and made his Football League debut in their inaugural match against Reading in August 1920. His two seasons in South Wales saw him score 8 goals in 72 matches before he was transferred to Southend United in February 1922. He scored 20 goals in 108 games for Southend over the next 3 seasons before moving to non league Rugby Town in the summer of 1925.
