Nottingham born wing half Syd Dickinson played for junior club Dale Rovers in 1922 and spent the second half of 1923-24 with Nottingham Forest without making their first eleven. He joined Midland League Mansfield Town in 1925 from where Bradford Park Avenue signed him in February 1927, with Dickinson making his Football League debut at Nelson almost immediately. They finished 3rd that season but won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1927-28, with Dickinson making 18 appearances, and he played for Bradford in the Second Division until he was signed by Port Vale in November 1933 after 21 goals in 169 appearances. However at Vale he only made a dozen appearances, scoring twice, before joining Lincoln City in August 1934, where his single season saw 3 goals in 15 appearances, after which he joined non league Grantham in 1935.
