Description

Girvan, Ayrshire born winger Charlie Devan began his football career with junior clubs Glasgow Ashfield in 1921 and St Anthony’s in 1922 before joining Clydebank in 1923. He spent time the same year at Morton before joining Second Division South Shields in the summer of 1924, making his Football League debut at Fulham that September. However he only made 12 appearances on Tyneside before joining Grimsby Town the following summer, and he was a major contributor, scoring 10 goals, to Grimsby’s triumphant season when they won the Third Division (North) Championship. He stayed another season at Blundell Park and scored in total 14 goals in 55 appearances for The Mariners before he joined Fulham in 1927 along with fellow Grimsby forward Frank McKenna, however he only played 7 games in the autumn of 1927, scoring twice for The Cottagers before his career finished, probably due to injury.
