Description

Beccles, Suffolk born goalkeeper Charles Dennington began his football career with Beccles Town from where he was signed by Third Division (South) club Norwich City in the 1922 close season, making his Football League debut against Queen’s Park Rangers that August. Understudy to Billy O’Hagan and then England international Tim Williamson, he played twice more in his debut season but only once in 1923-24, but he took over the gloves from Williamson in August 1924 when he missed only two matches and was an ever present in Norwich’s 1925-26 campaign.

“Testimony to his ability is generously given by forwards who have played against him”, it was said of him, and he made 209 appearances for The Canaries over seven seasons at The Nest, before he was signed by Second Division club Bradford City in the summer of 1929. At Valley Parade he was given the gloves but was dropped after 15 matches in November 1929 in favour of Wattie Shirlaw, and only played 3 further matches for The Bantams before the end of the season, when he returned to non league football in Suffolk initially with Kirkley, returning to play for Beccles Town in 1931, Kirkley again in 1932 and Gorleston in 1933, his last recorded club before his eventual retirement.
