Pentrebach, Wales born winger James Dempsey joined Millwall after the First World War and played in their inaugural Football League match against Bristol Rovers in August 1920 after they had joined The Football League Third Division (South) from The Southern League. However he couldn’t retain his place in their first eleven and only played once in 1921-22, and joined Merthyr Town after 16 league appearances for them in the summer of 1922. At Merthyr he was a regular in the first team in his first season but then lost his place in September 1923, returning for 3 more games towards the end of the season before leaving after 2 goals in 41 appearances.
