Described as “wonderfully reliable” and “one of the happiest players in the game, and the game’s biggest wise-cracker”, he was capped 14 times by Scotland between October 1934, when he made his Scotland debut in a 2-1 defeat to Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast, and his final appearance which came in a 2-1 defeat to England at Hampden Park in April 1939. He also appeared 11 times for the The Scottish League between October 1931 and October 1941.
