Description

Aberdeen born wing half Stewart Davidson began his football career with Shamrock and joined his hometown professional club originally as a right winger in May 1905, making his debut for them against St Bernards that August. By the time he joined First Division Middlesbrough in April 1913, he had made 112 appearances for The Dons, scoring once.

His Football League debut for Middlesbrough came that September at Manchester City, and his ‘Boro career lasted both sides of the War, during which he served his country in the military and he also played wartime football, spending some time on loan back at Aberdeen in 1917 making three further appearances for The Dons.

After the end of the conflict he resumed with Middlesbrough in 1919 being ever present in the first post war season. His consistency was rewarded in April 1921 when he was picked for Scotland in a 3-0 defeat of England at Hampden Park in front of 85,000. This would however be his only international cap and in May 1923 he returned to Aberdeen after 4 goals in 216 appearances for ‘Boro. He continued at Aberdeen making a further 38 first team appearances until 1926 when he joined non league side Forres Mechanics as player manager already aged 40. He remained with them until 1931 becoming coach to The Kent FA between 1932 and 1939, before becoming assistant manager of Chelsea in the summer of 1939, a position he held until his retirement in July 1957.
