Potton, Bedfordshire born left half Jabez Darnell played junior football for Biggleswade Town before joining Southern League Northampton Town in 1904, and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1905. He had played 35 first team games in the Southern League and FA Cup by the time that Tottenham joined the Football League in 1908, and featured in Tottenham’s inaugural Football League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1908. In that first League season he played 41 times as Tottenham were promoted to the First Division as Second Division runners up. Although on the fringes of the team in the latter 3 seasons, he played in all 7 seasons prior to the suspension of peacetime football in 1915 due to the outbreak of World War One, by when he had scored 4 goals in 195 appearances for Spurs. His career didn’t resume after the conflict.
