Description

Bilston, Staffordshire born goalkeeper Tom Cope began his football career with Clowne White Star from where he signed for Second Division Chesterfield Town in the summer of 1905 as a replacement for Sam Hardy who had been sold to Liverpool, Cope making his Football League debut at Burslem Port Vale that September, missing only 2 matches in his debut season. He was the undisputed number one glovesman at Saltergate for four seasons, being ever present in their 1908-09 campaign, which ended with Chesterfield failing to gain re-election, Cope joining Southern League Portsmouth in the summer of 1909 after 135 appearances for The Spireites.

Cope did well enough at Fratton Park to be signed by First Division Sunderland in 1910, where he was understudy to Tom Allan and Dick Roose, but he left Roker Park without having made a first team appearance and joined non league Frickley Colliery in 1911 before returning to play for Clowne White Star in 1912.
