Description

Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire born centre forward Fred Cooke began his football career with East Kirkby prior to the First World War, but after the War he was signed by First Division Sunderland in August 1919, making his Football League debut against Bradford Park Avenue in April 1920, scoring the opener in a 2-0 victory at Roker Park. Although this proved his only appearance of the season, he scored 4 more goals in 11 further appearances, principally in November and December the same year, the following season before joining Third Division (South) Swindon Town in May 1921.

He scored 10 goals in only 18 appearances for The Robins in 1921-22, with all but one goal coming when he was given a run in the first team between March 1922 and the end of the season. While he retained his place at the start of the new season, he lost it in November 1922 and played only twice more for The Robins, scoring 14 goals in 35 appearances for Swindon before joining Accrington Stanley in August 1923. Although he featured regularly for Stanley during his single season at Peel Park, he moved to non league Bangor City in the 1924 close season after 5 goals in 28 appearances, and finished with full time professional football.
