Description

Dundee born outside left, he started playing football in 1923 with junior club Dundee North End and began his senior career with Forfar Athletic in 1924 before joining hometown club Dundee in 1925. Such was his progress that he was twice selected for The Scottish League, playing against The Irish League in October 1926 and October 1927.

Cook joined First Division Bolton Wanderers in 1928 making his Football League debut against Leicester City that December, and in his first season he won the FA Cup, playing 8 times in Bolton’s run to the 1929 FA Cup Final, where they beat Portsmouth 2-0 at Wembley. He spent eight seasons of his career with Bolton, making 261 appearances and scoring 40 goals for the Trotters. While they were relegated to the Second Division in 1933, he helped them to promotion back to the top flight in 1935 as Second Division runners up, He also played as they reached the 1935 FA Cup semi final, where they lost in a replay to West Bromwich Albion at The Victoria Ground, Stoke.

While at Bolton, he won three caps for the Scotland between April and November 1934. He moved to Blackpool in the 1936 close season scoring once in 19 appearances, helping them gain promotion to the First Division as Second Division runners up, and joined Reading a year later, scoring 3 times in 37 appearances before rejoining Dundee in 1939. After the club temporarily closed down due to the Second World War, Cook made several guest appearances for neighbours Dundee United during 1941 before retirement.
