Countesthorpe, Leicestershire born full back William Cobley joined local junior club Countesthorpe United in 1932, playing for Solus in 1933 and Nuneaton Town in 1934. He joined Second Division Aston Villa making his Football League debut against Coventry City in October 1936 making 35 appearances in his debut season but only 9 appearances as Aston Villa won the Second Division Championship in 1937-38, playing in their FA Cup 6th round victory over Manchester City but not in their semi final defeat to eventual winners Preston North End. He played twice for Villa in the First Division in 1938-39 before returning to non league Solus in 1939. After the Second World War he joined Notts County spending 1946-47 at Meadow Lane without making a first team appearance.
