Burnley born centre half Joe Clegg started playing football for Accrington Hornets in 1888 before joining Bell’s Temperance in 1889 and Ramsbottom in 1890. He joined Accrington in July 1891 and made his Football League debut at Everton in March 1892, his only first team appearance before joining Second Division Bury in July 1892. He didn’t make his Bury debut until September 1894 but n his first season at Gigg Lane he played 27 times as Bury won the Second Division Championship, and he played four more seasons in the First Division scoring 6 goals in 115 appearances before finishing with professional football in 1899.
