Belfast born full back William Clay started his football career with Belfast Celtic in 1902, joining First Division Sheffield United in 1903, for whom he made his Football League debut against Notts County that October. He only played 7 times for The Blades before returning to Belfast Celtic at the end of the 1903-04 season, but in 1905 he joined Second Division Leeds City, making only one appearance in an FA Cup 2nd qualifying round tie against Mexborough Town in November 1905 which Leeds won 3-2. He then returned to Ireland in 1906 joining Irish League club Derry Celtic.
