Anerley, London born Wally Clarke began his football career at Blackheath in 1930 and played for Wimbledon in 1931 before returning to play for Blackheath. He had a brief senior football career with local professional Third Division (South) club Crystal Palace, for whom he signed from Blackheath in June 1933, making his Football League debut at Bristol City in October 1933. During a single season at Selhurst Park he played 20 matches for Palace, without scoring, but joined Kent League club Folkestone in June 1934, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
