Blackburn, Lancashire born outside right Harry Chippendale joined Accrington spending 1889-90 with them without making a first team appearance, subsequently joining Nelson later in 1890. He signed for First Division Blackburn Rovers in 1891 making his Football League debut against Burnley in September 1891. His 16 goals in 1893-94 brought him to the attention of the England selectors and he made his England debut at Cliftonville Gardens, Belfast in a 2-2 draw against Ireland in March 1894, which would prove his only England appearance. He continued to play for Blackburn until 1897, scoring 52 goals in 147 appearances before retirement, after which he served as a Football League linesman until November 1908.
