Calcutta, India born goalkeeper Robert Chandler began his football career with Aston Town in 1909 and played for Upper Thomas Street Boys in 1910 before spending 1911-12 and 1912-13 on the books of Glossop as understudy to Joe Butler and Arthur Causer, without getting any first team opportunities. He joined Aston Villa in 1913 as understudy to the legendary Sam Hardy and made his Football League debut, and only first team appearance, keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Boxing Day 1913. He then joined Birmingham & District League club Walsall in 1914 before the onset of the First World War effectively ended his football career.
