Description

Birmingham born centre forward Arthur Cashmore began his football career with local junior side Sparkhill Avondale in 1910 and played for Bromsgrove Rovers in 1911 before joining Birmingham and District League club Stourbridge in 1912. He was signed by Manchester United from Stourbridge in June 1913, and made his Football League debut against Bolton Wanderers that September. However he only played 3 times for United and was sold to Oldham Athletic in May 1914 for £100. He scored 9 goals in 21 matches for Oldham as they finished runners up in the League title race, their highest ever League finish, before the onset of the First World War led to football’s suspension in May 1915, during which Cashmore served in the Armed Forces.

He initially resumed playing with non league Darlaston in 1919 before Southern League club Cardiff City signed him that December, Cashmore finishing the season as top scorer with 14 goals from 15 appearances. The following season Cardiff entered The Football League and Cashmore played in their inaugural League match at Stockport County. He scored 13 goals in 37 matches over their first two League seasons but only four of these appearances came in the top flight after helping Cardiff to win promotion as Second Division runners up in 1920-21. He joined Second Division Notts County in November 1921, where he scored 6 goals in 18 games during 1921-22 before returning to non league football with Darlaston. He later played for a variety of non league clubs including Nuneaton Town, Shrewsbury Town and finally, after a third spell at Darlaston from 1925, he joined Hereford United in 1927 before his eventual retirement.

NB the shirt in the photograph is interesting, and could be a Stourbridge shirt prior to his move to Manchester United.
