Brimington, Chesterfield born centre forward Syd Carter began his football career with Bolsover Colliery in 1933 and had spells at Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers over the 1935-36 and 1936-37 seasons respectively without making the first eleven at either club. He joined non league Macclesfield Town in the 1937 close season where he had a tremendous scoring record, netting 55 goals in 1937-38 before moving to Mansfield Town in May 1938, making his Football League debut for Mansfield at Bristol Rovers that August. He scored 7 goals in 28 appearances for The Stags before World War Two intervened, during which he guested for Notts County, but he returned to Field Mill in 1946 scoring 3 more goals in a dozen post War appearances through to May 1947 before his playing retirement. He remained as Mansfield’s trainer from 1949 to his retirement in 1970.
