Description

Bristol born goalkeeper Henry Carter began his football career with Aberdare Town in 1907 and played for Workington in 1908, Millom Town in 1909 and Barrow in 1910 before joining Southern League West Ham United in 1912, making his debut for The Hammers in a Southern League win at Plymouth Argyle in February 1913. He enjoyed a run of 9 matches before the end of the season, but only played once more for The Irons against Gillingham in November 1913, before leaving the club when released in the summer 1914.

After the First World War he returned to Barrow in 1919 before a spell (perhaps on loan) with Welsh club Ton Pentre in 1920. When Barrow joined the Football League in 1921 Carter played 39 games for the club, although he wasn’t in goal for the first few games of the season and didn’t play in their inaugural League fixture. In 1922-23 he made a further 27 appearances to take his total to 66 appearances for Barrow during their League era, before retiring from professional football at the end of the season.
