Description

Cathcart, Glasgow born Kerr Campbell was a Scottish Amateur international who played at right back for Queen’s Park for over a decade having come through Mount Florida School and Queen’s Park Schools to join the venerable amateur Scottish League club, then playing in the First Division. He made his Scottish League debut for The Spiders in a 7-1 win over Partick Thistle at Firhill in February 1927 and made 293 appearances for Queen’s Park, becoming club captain, making his final appearance against Celtic in January 1938. He also played in the 1928 Glasgow Cup Final and three Merchants’ Charity Cup Finals (1931, 1933 and 1937), but all four finals were lost to the Auld Firm, twice to Celtic and twice to Rangers.

He was described as “outstanding for his speedy tackling and quickness in recovery” and “one of the most capable backs in Scottish football. The main feature of his play is its balance. He takes up position with the anticipation of the ideal defender, places his kicks judiciously and seldom fails in a tackle.” He also won 14 Amateur international caps for Scotland between 1930 and 1937, captaining Scotland Amateurs once.
