Description

Manor Park, London born inside forward Frank Burrill played for East London Schools, joining local club West Ham United in 1911 for whom he made his Southern League debut in March 1912 against Queens Park Rangers. He scored twice in 17 matches before he signed for Southend United in July  1914, however the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, and after the War he resumed with The Shrimpers before Second Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers paid £800 for his signature in May 1920, making his Football League debut at Fulham in August 1920.

That first season saw Wolves go on a Cup run that would see them narrowly lose the 1921 FA Cup Final to Tottenham Hotspur, and Burrill played in 7 cup ties including the Final. After 17 goals for Wolves in 69 appearances, he moved to Charlton Athletic in July 1923, spending a season at The Valley and scoring 4 times in 15 games. In May 1924 he returned to the Midlands with Walsall, for whom he scored 14 goals in 40 appearances in the 1924-25 season, when he was Walsall’s top goalscorer in the campaign, before retiring from professional football at the season end.

NB although published in 1924 the photograph shows Burrill in a Wolves shirt.
