Description

Dromore, County Down born outside left James Burns had joined Irish League club Glenavon around the end of the First World War and played in consecutive Irish Cup Final defeats for The Lurgan Blues in 1921 and 1922, but did manage to claim a City Cup winner’s medal in 1921. His form earned him a call-up for Ireland’s 2-0 defeat against England at The Hawthorns in October 1922 and he represented The Irish League on four occasions between October 1921, when he played as Ireland were beaten 1-0 by The Football League at The Oval, Belfast, and March 1923 when he played in a 2-2 draw with The Welsh League at Solitude, Belfast.

He then made a move across the water in 1924. Considered a “good capture” for Third Division (South) club Reading, Burns went straight into the first team making his Football League debut at Exeter City at the end of August but lost his place after four games. He never recovered his place and returned to Ireland at the end of the season.
