Description
Initially an inside forward, a position in which he played in Glenavon’s 1-0 Irish Cup Final defeat by Glentoran in 1921, Lurgan, County Armagh born Walter Brown was a versatile player who would later earn international recognition at right back, playing for Ireland against Wales in a 3-0 win at Windsor Park, Belfast in February 1926, he was also a non playing reserve against Scotland. In three appearances for The Irish League between October 1922 when he was first selected for a match against The Scottish League at Celtic Park, Glasgow, and March 1926, he played at inside right, left back and right back. He was described at the time as a “rather small but a brainy player, a keen tackler and sound kick”, when it was said of him he “can play with equal success at half-back”.
