Description

Newport, Isle of Wight born right back Charlie Brittan played for Southern League Portsmouth from 1904 but he never played for their first team before joining Northampton Town in 1907, playing four seasons and making 88 Southern League appearances before he signed for First Division Tottenham Hotspur in October 1911 in exchange for Walter Tull and £1,100. He made his Football League debut against Notts County in October 1911 and made 42 appearances for Spurs over the next two seasons, before joining Southern League Cardiff City for £325 in November 1913.

Brittan played both sides of the First World War for Cardiff and also played 6 representative games for The Southern League, also playing twice for The Welsh League, and he went on to pick up Welsh Cup winners medals with Cardiff in 1920 and 1922.  He was also captain of The Bluebirds in their first season in the Football League in 1920-21 as they were promoted to the First Division as Second Division runners up, and played in their inaugural League fixture, a 5-2 win at Stockport County in August 1920. He made a total of 83 appearances for Cardiff between 1920 and 1922 in addition to 88 Southern League appearances (and further FA Cup appearances) in their pre Football League era before his retirement.
