Longton, Staffordshire born wing half Billy Briscoe had spells as a junior with Watford and Stoke Ciy, purportedly appearing in 3 games (almost certainly wartime league fixtures) for The Potters before turning professional with Second Division Port Vale in 1918 and making his Football League debut for Vale at South Shields in October 1919.

He served the club for eleven seasons, for several of those as club captain, scoring 10 goals in 1923-24 and 12 goals in 1924-25, which included 4 goals when playing at inside left in an 8-2 FA Cup win at Alfreton Town in December 1924, all but the last one being in the Second Division. After their relegation he helped Vale to win the Third Division (North) Championship at the first time of asking in 1929-30 in his final season before being granted a free transfer to join Congleton Town in 1931.

Interestingly he had briefly left Vale, for about six months in summer of 1923 owing to a contract dispute, joining Congleton Town but returned to Vale brandishing his improved contract in January 1924. In total he made 307 appearances scoring 49 goals, he was also an accomplished Minor Counties cricketer for Staffordshire.
