Description

Cathcart, Glasgow born inside forward Hutton Bremner was a product of Boys’ Brigade football and joined amateur club Queen’s Park in 1929 making his Scottish League debut in a defeat to Motherwell that September, and he scored 30 goals in 142 appearances for The Spiders over his six years at Hampden Park, scoring twice in 6 caps for Scotland’s Amateur international side between 1931 and 1935. He also represented The Scottish League in a 3-2 victory over The Irish League at Firhill in October 1934.

Described at the time as “a naturally clever footballer… versatile enough to play in any of the forward positions”, he joined Motherwell in 1935 scoring 35 times in 119 League appearances, culminating in the Scottish Cup Final in 1939 against Clyde in which the favourites, Motherwell lost by four goals to nil against the much better Bully Wee side.

After the suspension of peacetime football due to the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, he continued to play for Motherwell in wartime football before leaving The Steelmen to join Aberdeen in 1944, with whom he only played wartime football. He represented The Scottish League scoring in a 3-2 defeat to The Football League at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool in October 1941. In 1946 he joined Hamilton Academical scoring 4 times in 15 appearances in the 1946-47 season before his retirement at the season end.

His younger brother Gordon Bremner played for Arsenal before the War and for Motherwell for five seasons after the War, and was a Scottish wartime international.
