Knutsford, Cheshire born winger (he played on both sides) Ernest Bracegirdle began his football career playing for Knutsford and joined Manchester League club Northwich Victoria in 1905, from where he joined First Division Blackburn Rovers in 1906. He made his Football League debut against Woolwich Arsenal the following November, scoring both goals in a 3-2 home defeat. He played another 20 matches in their campaign during his debut season, and 24 matches in 1907-08 but he made only 2 appearances during 1908-09.

He returned to the team in September 1909 before losing his place in December, making only 3 further appearances in 1910 and another season in the reserves before leaving Ewood Park to join Crewe Alexandra in 1911. After two seasons at Gresty Road he returned to play for Northwich Victoria in 1913 before the interruption of the First World War, after which he joined Altrincham in 1919, finishing his career with Winsford United who he joined in 1920.
