Description

Rotherham, Yorkshire born left half or centre half Alf Bluer began his football career with hometown Midland League club Rotherham County, from where he was signed by Second Division Stockport County in 1913, making his Football League debut in a defeat to Birmingham City at St Andrews in September 1913, Bluer made 21 appearances for The Hatters through to March 1914, the first ten of which were at left half and the next eleven at centre half, before losing his place, but hefeatured only twice more at pivot in the first half of the following campaign before regaining his place in February 1915, playing at left half, where he played 10 further matches before the end of the season.

Peacetime football was then suspended in May 1915 due to the onset of the First World War, and during the War Bluer served in the Armed Forces and also played 11 wartime league matches for Stockport County between September 1916 and March 1918. After the conflict he joined Southern League club New Brompton in 1919 but he had retired from professional football before Gillingham joined The Football League the following summer.

NB the photograph was taken on the pitch at St Andrews before Bluer’s debut for Stockport County on 3rd September  1913.
