Easington born inside forward Bob Birtley was with Everton during 1933-34 but failed to make their first eleven, moving to Coventry City, where he made his Football League debut against Northampton Town in August 1934, scoring in a 2-0 win. A single season at Coventry saw 11 goals in 35 games before a move to Crystal Palace, for whom he struck 18 goals in 78 appearances over the next 4 seasons. A move to Gateshead in the summer of 1939 saw him score twice in the opening 3 games of the 1939-40 season before it was suspended due to the outbreak of the Second World War, after which he had retired from the game.
