Description

High Spen, Gateshead born goalkeeper Jerry Best suffered an injury to his arm while serving during the First World War and after the War, having recovered, began his football career with Mickley Colliery Welfare in 1919, before joining Second Division Coventry City in 1920, making his debut against Rochdale in an FA Cup tie in December 1920. His Football League debut followed a week later on Christmas Day against Cardiff City.

He soon established himself as the automatic choice between the posts and missed only 9 games in five seasons including three consecutive ever present seasons from 1922 to 1925. In the summer of 1926 he moved to Halifax Town after 236 appearances for Coventry, but at Halifax he only played 9 times before moving on to Rotherham, where he also found it difficult to get a regular spot in the first eleven, playing 26 matches over two seasons before moving to non league Worksop Town in 1929.
