Montrose born outside left William Beedie played for Clyde whom he joined in 1915, moving to Blantyre Celtic in 1919 and subsequently to Portsmouth. He made his Portsmouth debut against Swansea Town in August 1920 in their inaugural Football League match making 21 appearances in their debut season, and then being ever present in 1921-22.
He missed only one match, scoring 6 times, as Pompey win the Third Division (South) Championship, scoring 7 goals the following season as Portsmouth followed up by nearly winning back to back promotions, eventually finishing 4th in the Second Division. He continued to play for Portsmouth until the summer of 1926 when after 29 goals in 216 appearances he moved to Oldham Athletic. However he never made a first team appearance at Oldham before retiring from the professional game.
