Description

Gilmerton, Edinburgh born centre half Bobby Baxter began his football career with Tranent Juniors in 1930 and played for Musselburgh Bruntonians in 1931 before joining First Division Middlesbrough in May that year, making his Football League debut at Birmingham in October 1932 and soon became a regular in the ‘Boro team. Originally an inside forward, he moved into the half back line from November 1935 and was a consistent member of their defensive unit throughout the rest of the 1930’s.

He won 3 caps for Scotland making his debut in a 3-2 win over Wales at Tynecastle in November 1938, playing in a 3-1 win over Hungary at Ibrox the next month and finally captaining his country in a 2-1 defeat against England at Hamden Park in April 1939.

He played for Middlesbrough until the outbreak of the Second World War by when he had become the club captain, having scored 20 goals in 269 appearances for Middlesbrough up to the abandonment of peacetime football. During the War he played for both Hearts and Hibernian in unofficial matches and also played for The Scottish League in a 3-2 defeat to The Football League at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool in October 1941.

On the resumption of football after the War he signed for Heart of Midlothian in 1946, scoring once in 28 games for Hearts before retiring to become manager of Leith Athletic in 1947. He stayed at Leith for three years and became the manager of Cowdenbeath in 1951, staying in the post until 1955.

Baxter’s son, also named Bobby, played professional football for Darlington, Brighton & Hove Albion and Torquay United.
