Bramley, Rotherham born right back Laurie Barnett began his senior football career with First Division Bradford Park Avenue signing for them in September 1919 and making his Football League debut at Sheffield United in September 1920. After 33 League appearances for the club, he joined Chesterfield on trial in February 1923 without appearing for their first eleven, and had spells in non league football with Alfreton Town in 1923 and Midland League Gainsborough Trinity later the same year.

In July 1924 he joined Second Division Barnsley, for whom he made 30 appearances over the next two seasons. He signed for Blackpool in July 1926, making 49 appearances in his three seasons with the Bloomfield Road club. He finished his career with Manchester City whom he joined in May 1930, where in his four years at Maine Road he won the FA Cup in 1934 when Manchester City defeated Portsmouth 2-1 in the Final at Wembley during the most productive season of his City career, when he played 45 times for the club. However he made only 4 more appearances before the year end before leaving the professional game after 93 appearances for The Citizens.
