Paulton, Somerset born left back Laurie Banfield played locally for Old Mills and Paulton Rovers before being signed by Bristol City manager Sam Hollis in July 1911, making his Football League debut against Hull City in April 1912, his only appearance of his debut season. He became a regular for The Robins from December 1912, playing both sides of the First World War, during which he served in the Armed Forces.

He missed only two games in the first peacetime season of 1919-20, when Bristol City reached the FA Cup semi final, losing 2-1 to Huddersfield Town at Stamford Bridge. He was an ever present during their 1921-22 relegation season, helping them to win the Third Division (South) Championship the following season at the first time of asking, but after they were once again relegated in 1924 Banfield made only one further appearance, in a home defeat to Exeter City in September 1924, before joining non league Ilfracombe Town later the same year after six goals (all penalties) in 277 appearances for Bristol City.
