George (or Geoffrey?) Avery played for Blackburn Rovers in the 1882 FA Cup Final against Old Etonians and was seriously injured early in the second half, forcing Rovers to play with ten men in a match they eventually lost 1-0. Although part of their squad which won the 1884 FA Cup, Avery did not play in the Final.
