Description

Walsall, Staffordshire born centre forward Arthur Attwood began his football career in Army football serving with The Shropshire Regiment and played for Walsall LMS in 1927 before signing for hometown Third Division (South) club Walsall in January 1928, making his Football League debut against Brentford that November, scoring in a 2-0 victory. A regular goalscorer once he got into the team, he scored 13 goals in 18 matches before being signed by First Division Everton in February 1929.

He made his debut in a home defeat to West Ham United in April 1929 and played twice more for Everton in 1929-30 before joining Bristol Rovers at the end of March 1930. He was an ever present in 1930-31 scoring 26 goals in Rovers’ campaign, and was comfortably the club’s leading goalscorer, but in November 1931 he was signed by Brighton & Hove Albion after 29 goals in 55 appearances for The Pirates. He scored a hat-trick in a win over Coventry City in December 1931 and a further treble against Thames in March 1930 before 4 goals in a 7-0 win over Gillingham the next month, scoring 29 goals in only 30 matches, leaving him comfortably the club’s leading goalscorer, remaining their top scorer with 35 goals in their 1932-33 campaign, 15 of which came in 10 FA Cup ties that saw Brighton reach the Fifth Round, where they were beaten by West Ham United in a replay. Of these he scored a double hat-trick in a 12-0 win over Shoreham in the FA Cup qualifying round and a hat-trick in a win over Bristol City on the last day of the season.

However Attwood lost his place in The Seagulls’ line up in February 1934 and stayed on the fringes at The Goldstone Ground for another season, before joining non league Northfleet in the summer of 1935 after 75 goals in 104 appearances for Brighton, finishing his career with Brighton & Hove Omnibus whom he joined in 1936.
