Ashley made his Owls debut in April 1936 and established himself as their first choice full back from December 1936, however they suffered relegation at the end of the season, despite Ashley scoring his only 3 career goals in 3 successive matches while deputising at centre forward in February and March 1937. He remained at the club for their final two seasons before the outbreak of the Second World War and he missed only one match as Wednesday narrowly missed out on promotion in 1938-39, finishing third in the division. However his career was effectively ended by the War, by when he had made 120 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.
