Description

Clowne, Derbyshire born Jack Ashley born right back Jack Ashley began his football career began his football career Clowne Miners Welfare and played for Bolsover Colliery in 1931, and Midland League club Shirebrook in 1932 before joining Third Division (North) club Mansfield Town in 1933, for whom he made his debut at Doncaster Rovers at Mansfield Town in November 1933. He soon established himself as The Stags’ regular right back and missed only 4 matches the following season before he was signed in September 1935 by First Division club Sheffield Wednesday after 78 appearances.

Ashley made his Owls debut in April 1936 and established himself as their first choice full back from December 1936, however they suffered relegation at the end of the season, despite Ashley scoring his only 3 career goals in 3 successive matches while deputising at centre forward in February and March 1937. He remained at the club for their final two seasons before the outbreak of the Second World War and he missed only one match as Wednesday narrowly missed out on promotion in 1938-39, finishing third in the division. However his career was effectively ended by the War, by when he had made 120 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.
