Description

Coventry born winger Thomas Arnold joined his local professional club, then in the Southern League, in 1903 from junior club Foleshill Great Heath before moving to London in May 1905 to join Second Division Arsenal for whom he made back-to-back first-team appearances in September of that year – his Football League debut at Stoke and then playing at home to Bolton Wanderers. Arnold had stepped in for James Bellamy but soon lost his place to the same man and the arrival of William Garbutt further limited his opportunities in the League.Arnold did feature regularly in the South Eastern League though, helping Arsenal’s second string to the title in 1906. He returned to Coventry City in 1907 and retired in 1911, but his allegiance with the Sky Blues remained and Arnold went on to be their coach and, later, a director.
