Description

Brampton, Derbyshire born left back Charles Alton began his football career with Spital Olympic joining Midland League club Chesterfield Town in 1911 for whom he made 4 appearances. He played for Castleford Town in 1912 and then signed for Doncaster Rovers in 1913 before joining Stalybridge Celtic in 1914.

After the First World War, during which Alton served as a corporal in the Royal Engineers, he joined Second Division Rotherham County in 1919, making his Football League debut against Nottingham Forest that August, in a season in which he missed only two matches. He scored his only career goal that wasn’t a penalty  in a defeat to Hull City on the last day of the season. However he lost his place in November 1920 and made only one further appearance for Rotherham before joining Brentford in the summer of 1921 after 56 appearances for County.

A regular for three seasons at Griffin Park, and an ever present in their 1922-23 campaign, he lost his place in December 1924 and only made one further appearance for The Bees before being released on a free transfer in August 1925 after 6 goals, all penalties, in 133 appearances, joining Southern League club Northfleet, with whom he played until his eventual retirement.
