Description

Edmonton, Middlesex born left half Wally Alsford began his football career with Second Division Tottenham Hotspur, signing amateur forms as a 17 year old in May 1929 after having played as a schoolboy for Tottenham Schools and London Schools. He played for Tottenham’s nursery clubs Cheshunt and Northfleet in 1928 and 1929 before signing professional forms with Spurs in August 1930, making his Football League debut at Reading that December and playing 14 matches as Spurs narrowly missed out on promotion, finishing third in the Second Division.

During seven years at White Hart Lane, Alsford only once played more than 20 matches in a season as Tottenham were relegated from the First Division in 1934-35 – he had played only twice in their promotion season of 1932-33. However his talents were given international recognition when he won his only England cap in a 2-0 defeat to Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1935.

He joined Nottingham Forest in January 1937 after 90 appearances for Tottenham, and made 30 appearances for them over his two seasons at The City Ground, but was forced to retire in May 1938 because of a foot injury picked up against Southampton in November 1937. He returned to football during the Second World War playing for Aldershot in 1941 and also for The Army, and he finally played for Grantham iu March 1946 before hanging up his boots.
