Description

Robert McNeil was a full-back who could play on both the left and right side of defence. He made his senior debut for Heart of Midlothian in an Inter City League win over Queen’s Park in April 1904 and in total played 7 times in the Scottish League for Hearts.

He joined Southern League Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 1905 from Hearts, making his debut that September at Brentford, and the Argyle handbook of 1905-06 states that he “should prove one of the smartest captures Argyle has made in defence. Knows the game and how to play it. Shows excellent judgement and though he comes from across the border, he is far from the wee laddie. The Three Towns can in a way claim Mac as a son of their own, for his mother is a native of Devonport”. Following a single season at Home Park during which he moved on to Southend United.
