Description

Cassop, County Durham born full back Tom Mackey played junior football for Cassop Celtic in 1925, Cassop Colliery in 1926, and Ferryhill Athletic in 1927 before joining Hartlepools United for whom he made his Football League debut against Crewe Alexandra in September 1928. He soon caught the eye of First Division Sheffield Wednesday and signed for them in December 1930 having scored once in 32 appearances, although he had to wait until the following April for his first team debut for Wednesday. Opportunities at Hillsborough were limited and he only made 4 appearances over 3 seasons before stepping down to the Third Division to join Luton Town in the 1932 close season, but at Kenilworth Road he found consistent first team football and was part of their 1936-37 Third Division (South) Championship winning team, although the next season proved his last. In all he had 6 seasons with Luton, scoring twice in 208 appearances, before retiring from football in 1938.
