Description

Spennymoor, County Durham born outside left Tom Mitchell played junior football before World War One for Parkside United in 1914, and after the conflict he played for Tudhoe United and Spennymoor United in 1918 before joining Blyth Spartans in 1919. In May 1920 he joined First Division Newcastle United and made his Football League debut at Chelsea in February 1921. Never assured of a first team place at St James’ Park, he stayed 6 seasons and was not selected for their 1924 FA Cup win, but he scored 5 times in 61 appearances for The Magpies before joining Leeds United in October 1926.

Although Leeds were relegated in his first season he was an ever present as they won the Second Division Championship in 1927-28, and he eventually left them when they were once again relegated in 1931, having scored 21 goals in 152 appearances over 5 seasons at Elland Road. In September 1931 he joined York City, having two final seasons at York before retiring from playing after 5 goals in 24 appearances, but not before Mitchell had scored York’s first goal at Bootham Crescent in a 2-2 draw with Stockport County on 31st August 1932. He eventually became York’s manager, a position he held from March 1937 to February 1950.
