Description

Rhyl, Denbighshire born centre forward Joe Hughes played football locally for Jollyboys in 1919 and Rhyl United in 1920 before joining First Division Bury after an unsuccessful trial with Birmingham. He made his Bury debut in an FA Cup tie at Millwall in February 1926 but didn’t play again that season, and had to wait a year for his Football League debut against Bolton in March 1927. He scored 6 goals in 4 of his 8 games over the next month but that was his only run in the first eleven before he was allowed to join Third Division (North) Southport in March 1928. He scored once in 9 appearances for the Haig Avenue outfit before joining Rhyl Athletic that summer, playing for Bangor City in 1929 before returning to Rhyl Athletic in 1930.
